This year’s Microsoft Ignite will be different for sure, as it is the first-ever fully digital Microsoft Ignite. Attending in-person is the best way to enjoy conferences, and the Cybercom crew would have been there if Ignite had happened in New Orleans as planned. In-person, you get to know other people having similar interests and meet all the people speaking and developing at Microsoft. But obviously, this is the correct and right way to handle this event in the current situation and one positive thing that we can undoubtedly enjoy about this year’s event is the price. It’s all free and available to everybody. If you haven’t already registered, you can do that by visiting Microsoft Ignite registration website.
Quick recap from Microsoft Ignite 2019: Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Arc
Before we go ahead and share our tips on this year’s sessions, let’s have a quick recap on two big announcements from Microsoft Ignite 2019: Azure Synapse Analytics and Azure Arc.
Azure Synapse Analytics is the next evolution of Azure SQL Data Warehouse, and it brought together enterprise data warehousing and Big Data analytics. It has allowed us to help our customers by making better data-driven business decisions. And we should not forget how easy it is to enable machine learning and business intelligence with Azure Synapse. Oh, and almost forgot limitless scaling possibilities.
Another big Azure announcement was Azure Arc, a service enabling hybrid scenarios for customers by bringing Azure services and management to any infrastructure. It has enabled our customers to extend Azure’s management and security capabilities to resources running on any infrastructure, be it on-premises, AWS, Google Cloud… and no matter if it’s Linux-servers, Windows-servers or Kubernetes.
But that was so last year :) Let’s continue with this year’s must-see sessions.
Day 1: We don't want to miss a thing! First: Satya Nadella's opening talk
First thing’s first. Satya Nadella’s opening talk Building digital resilience gets the party started on Tuesday, and it starts at 18.30 Finnish time. The first real selection problem comes already on Tuesday evening at 21.30. There are loads of familiar faces and people on stage from Finland in a session Microsoft Fignite: Highlights. Still, we think we're going to lean towards Travis Wright’s session on Building a Hybrid data platform with Azure Arc enabled data services. And therefore skipping Erin Chapple’s session on cost savings running at the same time. Can’t have them all live but fortunately, they are available later as recordings.
Zero Trust is a hot topic, that is introduced in a session on Modernizing your Security Operations starting at 22.15. Too bad it starts at the same time as Mark Russinovich’s session on Azure innovations. Maybe we need to flip a coin to select between these two. There will be an Ask the Expert session following the Modernizing your Security Operations starting at 23.00. And while we’re at it, there’s also another interesting session starting at 23.00, as Maersk joins the stage to share the seven ways to optimize your Azure costs.
If you’re not ready to go to bed before midnight or you can be identified as a night owl, you might be interested in watching an Azure Sentinel session at 0.30. There will be Ask the Expert session following at 1.15.
Day 2: Check out these pre-recorded sessions
For the second day, we're a bit disappointed that Enable successful cloud adoption with Azure landing zones is a pre-recorded session for on-demand, but the related Ask the Experts session starting in the morning at 7.45 will be the first to watch. Another pre-recorded on-demand session that we want to recommend is the classic Inside Azure Datacenter Architecture with Mark Russinovich.
Considering last year’s big Synapse announcement for this year, it is good to check up on the lessons learned for Synapse and discuss the future. Saveen Reddy will have multiple demo rich sessions for Synapse on Wednesday and Thursday following with an ask the expert. Combined with Arun Ulagarachagan’s two sessions: Deliver insights where decisions are made with Power BI and Azure session and Building systems of insights for enterprise scale with Power BI and Azure, will surely provide a valuable look into how Synapse has been utilized to bring value for organizations. Top it off with the future of data Systems session to really build an understanding of possible directions for your future in the data context.
Remember that you can browse the whole session catalogue and build your unique schedule through Session scheduler.
